Milam County
Milam County is located Northwest of College Station. It sits 150 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is home to cities and towns such as Cameron, Rockdale, Buckholts, and Milano. The county is named after Benjamin Rush Milam, a major figure in the Texas Revolution. After troops decided to bunk down, instead of marching forward, Milam gave his famous, impassioned plea: "Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio?" Three hundred men followed Milam to San Antonio where they saw victory with the surrender of Gen. Martín Perfecto de Cos and the Mexican army. Milam was killed during the battle by a sniper before the victory was clenched, but his legacy lives on with the naming of this beautiful county in his honor.
